A few Tips from the Doctors:
-The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child’s first dental visit be by one year of age or 6 months following the eruption of the first tooth. We agree with this recommendation, as we feel prevention and education is key to a healthy smile.
-We recommend parents help brush their children’s teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste. Children still need helping brushing until at least age 6, as their manual dexterity does not fully develop until then.
-Starting at age 1, we recommend using a fluoridated toothpaste. Children do not need a large amount of toothpaste on the brush:
-For ages 1-3, we recommend a smear amount (the size of a rice grain)
-For ages 3+, a pea size amount is appropriate
-We are aware that parents are concerned about their children swallowing toothpaste, however when used in appropriate amounts fluoride will not be problematic for their digestive systems.
-Once all of the primary teeth are erupted and touching, we recommend flossing once daily and rinsing with fluoride mouthrinse (as long as the child can swish and spit).
